PART III

The Turkish Airlines 737 landed with a series of bumps on the runway at Istanbul’s Sabiha Gökçen airport. Cooper had feigned a fear of flying and now he gripped the arms of his seat tightly and closed his eyes.

“Almost there, Thomas,” Fairweather said from the business class seat next to him.

“I need a holiday after that.”

“No time for rest. It’s going to be an intense few days. We’ve got a lot of work to do.”

“Do you know where we’re meeting Sidorov?”

“Quiet,” Fairweather said in a low voice. “Best not use his name when we’re around other people. This is sensitive—you need to remember that.” He took his mobile from the pocket in front of him and switched it on. It beeped repeatedly as messages arrived. “We’re being met––that’s all I know. They won’t want to send us an exact location over email for security reasons.” He glanced at Cooper. “Are you okay?”

“I’ll be fine.”

“Remember what we discussed. We’re moving into the more delicate phase of the project now. Our new friend will want to get a sense of what we can and can’t do for him. He’ll be worried about the possibility of being placed on a list of sanctioned individuals. He’ll be worried he won’t be granted a visa. He’ll be worried his portfolio of business interests will be blocked by the government. Our job is to reassure him we are the best-placed company to ensure none of that happens.” He patted Cooper’s arm. “You’re going to be rich because of what you can help me do for him. Think about that if the nerves get too bad.”

“You can’t spend money in a prison cell.”

Fairweather leaned in close and lowered his voice even further.

“I have a very limited tolerance for complaining. We’re here to do a job. We’re here to look and sound professional, capable, and determined. In case it’s not occurred to you yet, you’ve already crossed a line. You’ve broken the law several times over the past month and I’ve ample evidence to prove it. So let’s grow up, do our jobs and get this done, shall we?”

They heard the pneumatic hiss of the aeroplane door being opened. Two men dressed in dark suits appeared and made their way down the aisle towards them.

“Mr. Fairweather?” said the larger of the two. “Mr. Williamson? Will you both please come with us?”

It wasn’t a question. Fairweather and Cooper took their bags from the overhead locker and followed one man off the plane. The second man walked behind them. They deplaned and went down a set of steps to the apron where a black Mercedes Vito with blacked-out windows was waiting for them, its engine idling.

“What about our bags?” asked Fairweather.

“They are being collected for you,” said the man.

Collected and searched, thought Cooper. He wasn’t worried. In the same way that every item in his flat had been carefully selected, Cooper had nothing on his person or in his bags that didn’t fit with his legend.

They climbed into the back of the van and were driven a short distance.
